The Instituto Bernabeu clinic in Cartagena celebrated its 20th anniversary this Wednesday, 15 of May, marking two decades of excellence in the care of patients seeking to become parents and who are unable to achieve this naturally. Since its opening in 2004, the clinic has become a benchmark in the region, offering the most advanced assisted reproduction techniques and personalised treatment for each patient. Since then, more than 700 children have been born thanks to Instituto Bernabeu’s assisted reproduction treatments. This means that every 10 days a baby is born thanks to the clinic’s professionals.

“For two decades we have worked tirelessly to ensure that our founding values, those that Dr Rafael Bernabeu turned into our main institutional pillars almost 40 years ago, continue to be valid,” said Dr Andrea Bernabeu, Instituto Bernabeu medical co-director, during the ceremony.

In the same line, Dr Bernabeu assured that “the Instituto Bernabeu clinic in Cartagena has played a key role in the development of reproductive medicine in the Region of Murcia“. During these 20 years, she continued, “we have helped thousands of couples to become parents, and we are happy to have been part of the lives of each and every one of them“.

On the other hand, she stressed that “the world needs reproductive medicine more and more. The society in which we live presents us with challenges that we, as professionals, must address. The low birth rate, an increasingly later maternal age and new family models are just some of the challenges we face“. That is why, she added, “we are committed to research and innovation and will continue to work to develop new techniques and treatments that are even more effective and safer for our patients“.

The event was attended by the General Director of Public Health and Addictions of the Region of Murcia, Juan José Guillén, who stressed that “research is an essential part of any healthcare process, and an important part of Instituto Bernabeu’s resources are directed to this purpose. For this reason, I would like to congratulate the entire group for these 20 years in the city of Cartagena“. The first deputy mayor of the city of Cartagena, Diego José Salinas, also attended the celebration and wanted to thank “the involvement of the Instituto Bernabeu medical team, a centre that has helped many Cartagena couples to have children and has become a benchmark for the whole region“. “We are very proud to have this magnificent clinic in our city“, he concluded.

Throughout these two decades, the Instituto Bernabeu clinic in Cartagena has been a pioneer in the introduction of new technologies and assisted reproduction techniques. Currently, the team is led by Dr Carlos Alvarado, gynaecologist specialising in reproductive medicine, and is made up of gynaecologists, biologists, embryologists and care support staff.

Dr Alvarado assures that “research and innovation are fundamental pillars of our activity. We believe the best way to offer our patients the best possible care is to be at the forefront of the latest scientific advances. That is why we are constantly investing in research and development”.

Medical excellence

Instituto Bernabeu has 9 clinics in Madrid, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Albacete, Cartagena, Elche, Benidorm and Venice and every week, the group’s medical committee, made up of specialists from all the clinics, meets to continue at the forefront of reproductive medicine, updating on the most cutting-edge and innovative topics and tackling the most complex clinical cases from a multidisciplinary approach, with the aim of optimising results and offering patients the best solutions and options for success.

In 2025, the group will celebrate its 40th anniversary since its foundation in Alicante by Dr Rafael Bernabeu, consolidating its position as a leader in reproductive medicine at national and international level.

Among the milestones of Instituto Bernabeu, the first birth of the world’s first child free of hereditary blindness (retinoschisis) in the summer of 2004 and the world’s first birth of a child free of Marfan Syndrome, applying MDA, in February 2006, stand out.
