Radiation effects over male fertility (mobiles, Wi-Fi, microwaves, etc.)
Some electronic devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, Wi-Fi, and microwave ovens, generate non-ionizing radiation that can affect male fertility. This is revealed by one of the latest reviews recently published by Agarwal’s research group in Cleveland, USA (Kesari et al., 2018).
These devices generate radio frequency electromagnetic fields that applies a detrimental effect on different parameters that measure sperm quality, such as motility, morphology and sperm count. In addition, there seems to be an increase in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause damage to different cells and produce a fragmentation of the sperm DNA.
Although the exact mechanisms by which radiofrequency electromagnetic fields affect the male reproductive system are not known, it does appear to have to do with exposure time, distance from the radiation source, power density and penetration depth.
Undoubtedly, more studies are needed to know the extent of these radiations on fertility, taking into account the continuous increase in this type of electromagnetic pollution due to the new technologies development.
