Dr Giulia Bertapelle from Instituto Bernabeu Venice addresses the low response to ovarian stimulation at the SIRU national congress.

Dr Giulia Bertapelle, gynaecologist specialising in reproductive medicine at Instituto Bernabeu Venice, participated as a speaker at the National Congress of the Italian Society of Assisted Reproduction (SIRU in Italian) held in Bari. She spoke about the low response to ovarian stimulation, addressing a crucial problem in the field of fertility.

“Low response to ovarian stimulation can pose a significant challenge for many women seeking to conceive through in vitro fertilisation (IVF), so it is crucial to identify the underlying causes and personalise treatment for each patient,” explains Dr Bertapelle.

A low response to stimulation can affect women’s fertility in many different ways. Among the most common effects are a decrease in the number of eggs available for fertilisation and reduced egg quality.

In this sense, Dr Bertapelle pointed out that optimisation of ovarian stimulation protocols, the use of drugs to improve ovarian response and the application of advanced IVF techniques, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or the use of donated oocytes, are some of the options available for patients in this situation.

Dr Bertapelle advocates for an early approach to ovarian stimulation low response, as “by identifying and treating symptoms in a timely manner, success rates of assisted reproductive treatments can be improved, thus reducing the need for multiple IVF cycles and decreasing the emotional and economic burden for couples”.

In addition, by tailoring treatments to each patient’s individual needs, the effectiveness of ovarian stimulation can be optimised and the number of eggs available for assisted reproduction treatments can be identified
