Instituto Bernabeu measures its carbon footprint to reduce emissions to the Environment

Measuring the carbon footprint is a main step in understanding the environmental impact of an organisation’s activities. Once this information is available, areas for improvement can be identified and a plan for reducing emissions can be developed. For this reason, at Instituto Bernabeu we have calculated the carbon footprint for previous years by implementing a rigorous monitoring plan, which “demonstrates a real commitment to sustainability and climate change mitigation”, according to Instituto Bernabeu’s Quality, Environment and Sustainable Development director, Elena García Llopis. In addition, we have also managed to reduce electricity consumption and reduce waste, while maintaining optimal waste segregation to reduce our footprint.

These measurements have been registered in the Carbon Footprint and greenhouse emissions reduction commitments section of the Spanish Climate Change Office of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO in Spanish). This registration entails a commitment to submit an emissions reduction plan, which aims to develop and implement a low-carbon strategy to reduce, and even offset, our footprint, thus improving the environmental performance of our organisation.

Instituto Bernabeu’s corporate culture includes in its integrated system policy the irrevocable duty to protect the environment as a necessary guarantee of health. As a result of this commitment, the company’s strategic objectives include environmental improvement, the obligation to consume resources efficiently in the fight against climate change and the reduction of the harmful waste generated by our activity.

In this regard, Instituto Bernabeu has an unwavering and fundamental commitment to its immediate surroundings. And this agreement involves environmental protection, specifies its respect for the environment in lines of conduct and well-defined objectives in all its functions and levels, and goes beyond what the legislation in this area states, by acquiring beneficial commitments for environmental protection on a voluntary basis to minimize the impact of its activity, being certified in the UNE EN ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Systems.

In order to keep improving, we have developed our minimization plan to reduce our carbon footprint by at least 25% in the next year.It is essential that organisations recognize and assume responsibilities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to mitigate climate change and promote sustainable development”, adds Elena García, who emphasized that “we have worked to understand the greenhouse gas emissions generated by our activity in order to carry out planning that may contribute to reducing the carbon footprint in all our clinics”.

This action is included in the commitments acquired by the Instituto Bernabeu Group and under the umbrella of the Social Responsibility and Environment Project, initiated with the installation of the first self-consumption photovoltaic plant in assisted reproduction centres.
