Podcast on implantation failure with Dr Daurelio

Dr Rosa María Daurelio, gynaecologist specialised in reproductive medicine at Instituto Bernabeu Madrid, is one of the guest voices in a series of nine podcasts dedicated to exploring numerous topics related to assisted reproduction in which nine experts have been able to offer their point of view. In this case, the topic of discussion was implantation failure.

The podcast, moderated by Dr Marta Devesa from Hospital Dexeus in Barcelona, focused on the evaluation of strategies for patients facing embryo implantation failure. Dr Daurelio shared her experience and knowledge of the tests recommended for both women and men.

«The concept of implantation failure has recently changed,» explained Dr Daurelio, «and we know that, when the embryonic and uterine factors have been previously ruled out, the incidence of implantation failure is very low”. Among the techniques discussed, she mentioned pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGTA) which, in older women at risk of chromosomal abnormalities, shortens the time to pregnancy, reducing the number of embryo transfers.

«Optimising the embryo factor should be the first line of treatment,» Dr Daurelio said. «However, not all patients are perfect candidates for PGTA because it is still an invasive technique for the embryo and the risk/benefit of the technique should be assessed» in each patient.

Nevertheless, experts agree on the importance of improving lifestyle as an integral component of any treatment, highlighting the importance of habits such as quit smoking, regular exercise and weight control, which can contribute to improved success rates. Another great ally for patients diagnosed with implantation failure is emotional support.

Dr Daurelio insisted on the need to provide patients with honest information about the real chances of success in each specific case based on current scientific evidence.

These podcasts, organised by the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), with the support of Merck, are aimed at assisted reproduction professionals.
